Ian McKechnie is a versatile and experienced engineering, management and project professional, with extensive expertise and experience in a range of engineering and project activities and application sectors.
A particular strength is Ian’s insight and understanding of how a holistic, structured and coherent approach, aligning the detail with the ‘big picture’ across technical and non-technical aspects, is key to project, PPP and engineering successful outcomes – which approach he applies and references as a Strategic Advisor and ‘Troubleshooter & Fixer’.
Ian has gained extensive systems engineering experience during his career and is a firm proponent of the systems engineering philosophy.
Ian’s strengths also include a pragmatic and realistic outlook and approach, sound business and commercial acumen, together with his abilities as an independent, objective and strategic thinker and facilitator.
His experience as a project advisor/consultant and project manager includes public/private partnerships (PPPs) (for example BOT). This includes independent advisory work, as well as strategy, structuring, planning, project and engineering management and bid/proposal management aspects for a technology-based application.
Ian’s ‘troubleshooting and fixing’ experience includes forensic engineering and consulting, and dispute and dispute resolution support. It also includes independent assessment, investigation and remedial advisory support pertaining to programme/project/engineering management and technical aspects.
His experience includes being an independent expert advisor/consultant and expert witness. Ian’s dispute resolution experience includes acting as an adjudicator.
Ian’s extensive ‘troubleshooting and fixing’ experience, and the acquired insights and expertise, is a key aspect and strength of his broader strategic advisory (and ‘troubleshooting & fixing’) capability – applicable to all stages of the project and engineering lifecycle, from the front-end through design and implementation, to operations and maintenance and closure.
Ian’s multi-disciplinary and discipline-specific experience and exposure spans various application sectors including power/energy, mining/resources, aviation infrastructure/systems, communications/ICT, oil & gas/petrochemical, industrial, infrastructure, environmental assessment, construction, and electrical and electronic systems and infrastructure, including defence systems.
In addition to Ian’s broad-based strengths as a project, PPP and engineering generalist, he also has a particular interest and expertise in various niche and specialised technical areas. In this respect he also collaborated with Wits University over a period of many years in respect of research, applications engineering, and training, where he was appointed as an Honorary Research Fellow.
He is an experienced facilitator, speaker, presenter and trainer, and author/co-author of numerous papers and articles.
